Wolf packs are barred entrance to this bush; a change of skin must precede the eating of fire. With this I am not boasting of particular talents or hush- ed-up wonders, semi-flawless flattery: a to-do list, utter loneliness, bristle cigarette lighter flint, a pistol, a gadget almost out of battery for my exclusive use. Willingness suffices us – and light, hopefully bright, although not outshining blind surrender willl you accept? understand? take it in? pierce the dark nerve of this denseness but only if you’re able to hold tight and wholly contain me while I fall asunder.
Quando afinal nada, deste nada, ficará, «as I sail out to die» com a última memória do teu nome.

In a book by Dylan Thomas
In six years time, you’ll be little more than this: the bookmark you signed, suddenly found again, a sentence that could be a line (‘I’ve never been able to love never’) half way through a book and my life. Let’s for once forget the misunderstandings, the hurt wounded way your lips touched the roll-up paper – and got burnt (that same book told me that the Sept 12, 1996 coach ticket to Seixal didn’t make it as filter). I’d turn elsewhere to ask if art can be the reason for art, while jealousy (growing in the dark) may perhaps strike the best pages. Or I wouldn’t even do that: the morning outside is a renewed promise of forsakenness and I’ve just watched Mamma Roma – another film, a whole life, keeping us apart. When, after all, nothing of this nothing remains ‘as I sail out to die’ with the last memory of your name.

Things
In everything there’s a more-than-thing staring at us as if saying: ‘It’s me’, something that’s no longer there or was lost prior to the thing, and that loss is the thing. In certain high, absolute afternoons when at last the world welcomes us as if we too were the world, our own absence is a thing. Then the house awakens and the books imagine us on the scale of their own loneliness. Once we too had a name but, if ever we heard it, we did not recognise it.

6 (An Italy of the mind)
In the Italy of the mind we don’t know whether it’s night or day. In the Italy of the mind nothing is known and everything is the subject of belief. In the Italy of the mind beauty is still possible, even under the ashened skies and that’s perhaps why.

Parts of a whole
This afternoon, as I sat on a park bench, I tried to read a difficult book while waiting for you. The book made waiting harder, more painful. Then I lifted my eyes from the pages, put the book aside; I saw a young man approaching and going by holding a plastic bag full of red apples in one hand and a carton of eggs in the other. It was a transparent plastic bag clearly revealing the perfect shape and splendour of the apples, all together like parts of a whole. I couldn’t stop looking at them and just then you came. Only now, having had dinner and done the washing, I remember the book left abandoned on the bench.

I repeat the inexorable sagacity of the psalms
I repeat the inexorable sagacity of the psalms and I love the open gates in the face of the water’s strength I try to understand my time and the weightless intent of the poem I have no other eyes or hands you no longer show me the images but I can see the ivies shaping their sombre lips through interjection and breadth I am just a throbbing mouth a troubled volcano ground water’s incessant countenance before the doors I repeat the tropes the audible readability of the place I know that someone is always waiting for the mature fruit on the eve of the hand murky water to the waist I know that someone is always waiting as if waiting holding the glaive for the windows to blossom I know someone is always waiting for a poem

Eschatology
And, at last, God returns full of intimacy and unexpectedness contemplated already from centuries above humble measure of a verbal silence we thought destined to be lost See God climbing the steep path that we have paced a thousand times and stop to wait without impatience meek as a sick lamb Which one of us is the other’s shadow? Even if no pity preserves the maps we’ll come down close behind rampant and empty like a tree trunk
